Laughing Squid

I’m actually surprised it’s taken me this long to write about Laughing Squid… Now that I think about it, there is really no excuse – my bad, please accept my deepest apologies.

Now that is behind me, Laughing Squid is mishmash of art, tech and culture.  Scott Beale is the man behind the madness – the “primary tentacle” as he puts it.  As such, he has shaped the site around his personality and interests – luckily for the reader/user, both are really cool.

Where else could you read about Glamourpuss, while setting up hosting?

Project Kickass

The title summarizes what this blog brings to the table.  Off the top of my head, I can think of two reasons the content is pure kickass – probably more if I meditated or something.

First, it keeps the look simple.  There are not any color schemes resembling vomit and ads are nonexistent.  Some might call it too Plain Jane, but it’s better than the majority of ugly color whore sites out there.

Second, the content is real. Chris@projectkickass.com does not mess around.  His entries are relevant, important criticisms of everyday life.  I practically shed a tear every time I read a new post.  Don’t even get me started on what happens when I reread stuff.

Bottomline: Kickass.

Unplggd

Cords can suck, especially when they get all tangled and messy.  Luckily, there are resources that can help… one of the best being Unplggd, a little subsection of Apartment Therapy.  Unplggd specializes in having that clean look that everyone wants, without loosing the functionality of the jungle of cords.  Actually I stand corrected, when I showed my uncle the site, he responded with:

“Why would I want that?  People need to know I got stuff that works.  This isn’t a sitcom I’m living in…”

So, everyone but him…

Do you have a big Christmas list?  Need some cool tech presents on the cheap?  How about a DVD or video game for pennies on the dollar?  Well, there is no better time to fulfill those requests (for yourself or others), than the day after Thanksgiving a.k.a. Black Friday.

However, with so many options and crazy people out there in order to have a successful shopping spree you need to have a plan.  This week at Curtropolis is dedicated to helping you survive the potential horrors of the Black Friday experience.  First and foremost, you need to know what deals are out there.  Luckily there are sites like BlackFriday.info to help you out.  So, get going and start your plan of attack…

Crossfit

Crossfit

Want to get in gnarly shape, while doing some gnarly exercises?  Well, Crossfit could be your answer.  I could explain, but I don’t think I would do it justice; however, according to the website:

“CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.”

To summarize, Crossfit is bad ass.  The best part is that you follow the Crossfit blog, the gnarly exercises are prepared for you and are total surprises.  You just have to find the tank…

Joystiq

joystiq

It’s been awhile since I talked about a gaming blog… what better time than now?  I mean, we’re getting closer to the holiday season, which means a perpetual onslaught of new video game titles for parents to buy their spoiled children.

Anyway, let’s talk about Joystiq.  Although it’s another blog in the ever expanding, saturated gaming genre it’s ok.  It’s ok because it’s good.

You get your standard gaming fair, but the articles are intelligent and entertaining.  Plus, they actually give insight into the industry other than just hardcore reviews, previews, copy, paste…  Now if you’re not into a little insider info, news and gossip you might want to go elsewhere, but for everyone else this is a great resource.

The Horror Blog

With it being Halloween and all, Curtropolis decided to get in the spirit.  At first it was a desperate search for a decent Halloween blog – this ended badly.  After that, plan B went into action and the staff was reminded of a cool little blog that could fit the theme.

The Horror Blog offers a ton of horror related content, something very applicable to today.  The best part is that it doesn’t have to be exclusive to Halloween, yes you can enjoy horror (if you’re into that) all year round.  Check it out if you dare… wow that was lame.

Watch out!  Actually, don’t worry about it because you can’t.  You know why?  Cause io9 freaking comes from the future!  Well, that’s what they say at least… their tagline reads,

“We come from the future”

I don’t know about you, but I believe them.  Just check out the crazy stuff on their blog.  Granted, some is a little odd, but all is wicked cool.  What do you expect though, Gawker knows what their doing, no matter what genre a blog is in.

The Daily Beast

the daily beast

If pop culture and more “grown up” news had a love child, it would be The Daily Beast.  It’s a great idea actually, take “real” news and make it seem like an issue of US Weekly.  Now not only can celebrities do crap just like us, politicians can too…

Although I am ripping on the Beast a little, it is actually pretty good.  I have to say it’s much easier to navigate with big pictures, rather than reading headlines.  If I want to see the most recent scandal news, well a huge picture of the unfortunate party is easier to find than a bold header trying to be witty.  Try it at your own risk though.

The Daily WTF

Ever wonder what those guys in the IT department are laughing about?  Well, one way to get into their heads is to check out The Daily WTF.  Yeah you probably won’t get all the jokes right away (unless you’re pretty techy), but at least you can kind of jest with the guys responsible for fixing your broken, virus plagued work computer.  Anything helps… right?
